Marketing at Events

Marketing at Events

Events have a variety of ways for you to market your business
- have a booth / table
- be a sponsor
- be an attendee
- be a speaker
- provide a door-prize
- provide gifts or coupons for the bags
- be the organizer
- be a guest of someone who has an extra ticket
- have your business cards or flyers or product on someone else's table

To choose which things to do at an event
1) what is your budget?
2) who is the target market for the event?
3) how many people do they expect to attend?
4) are you ready to market? (have handouts or a draw or signage)
5) will you have exclusivity for a booth?

Sometimes the best events that you can attend have nothing to do with your business and you go as an attendee and talk to a vendor and they buy from you or connect you to someone that will.

Attendees can not market directly to other attendees or vendors at large tradeshows.  The organizers will not be happy and ask you to leave or fine you for trespassing.  You can have conversations and enter draws and mingle.

Get out and attend events - it will give you energy and give your business some exposure.

More sales!

$$$$$

Every business wants more sales - more money!

Back up a bit -- what do you need in order to get more sales?

- what is the last step before you get a sale?  Do you send a proposal / have a coffee meeting / the prospect tries on your product?

1 - identify what your prospect needs to do before they will buy from you?
2 - how many prospects do you need to get to this stage for every one sale?
If you say "every person that tries on my product - buys from me" then I would say - not enough people are trying on your product or they are making their decision before they get to this stage.
3 - how do you motivate people to get to this critical stage in your sales process?
* test drive our car and be entered to win one
* visit our store and get the autograph of a baseball player
* complete our survey and we will donate to a charity
* take a tour of our fitness facility and get one month free (no strings attached)
* try on our shoes and get a free shoe freshener
* enjoy this drink and take the glass home
* try our treadmill at this tradeshow and get a free t-shirt
* buy the large bottle of shampoo and get a free hair gel
* try our product for free
* buy this product / try it  / send in the coupon for your money back even if you like it
* have a free lunch and listen to our financial advisor's lunch and learn
4 - get more prospects in the pipeline so that more people will get to this critical step in your sales process
* make more phone calls
* send your e-newsletter on a regular basis
* attend networking meetings
* be pro-active

The bottom-line is that you need more people in the pipeline and figure out how to move them along the pipeline so you get them to that last step.

PS - do not forget to focus on your target market

Booths / Events / Tradeshows

Do I get a booth at an event or tradeshow?

Marketing always comes back to your target market.  Will your target market be attending this event.

Here are some questions that will help you choose great events for your business:

1 - will my target market be attending this event?
2 - how many people are expected to walk through the event?
3 - is there a chance that I can have Revenue from the event that is at least 10 x the booth cost?
4 - other than sales, what are the benefits of attending this event?
5 - how much manpower does this event need and do I have it or do I have to pay for it?
6 - is your business the correct size for the event?  If you are a one person business and you have a booth at a national tradeshow you may look out of place; larger businesses may look out of place at evening business networking events.
7 - is the timing right for your business to have more exposure?

Words - Marketing & Sales

Words for Marketing & Sales - Use the words of your target market not your own words. Too many advertisements, presentations and articles are written in the words of the seller. Words that are jargon just to the industry, words that only certain people use in real life. Even if your target market company is using those words, is the decision maker of your product or service using those words. You may be selling technological advancements to upgrade a factory but the CEO is not a hands on technology person or an engineer -- use plain English words. use the words of your target market. When you use industry specific jargon or acronyms then automatically explain them as you go along. Not that you are insulting anyone but you just do not need them stuck trying to translate something that they feel they should know but they can not remember the word at the moment. Talk in a way that your client can easily understand you and your point and watch your marketing improve, your sales improve and of course the bottom line improve. Targeting your Marketing

Targeting Your Marketing

All marketing workshops and books talk about target markets. They are important because the more you know about them - the more money you save, the faster you get clients and the easier it is to get clients.

If you are selling make-up and I sen you to one networking meeting:
a) 100 ladies - you might have a chance of getting the attention of half of the people
b) 100 men - you might have a chance of getting the attention of 1 or 2 of the people
c) 50 women / 50 men - you might have a chance of getting the attention of 26 people

Which event would you go to if you were only allowed to attend one? The event that has 100 ladies would be your best option for your time, money and effort.

You can target your marketing even more than that. I challenge you to list 20 details about your target market.
- geographical area
- male / female
- age
- size of business
- are they busy? are they slow?
- are they searching for your services or have no idea you exist?

Once you have 20 ideas then stop and read them outloud. Usually a great marketing idea will jump off the page at you. Try this and send me an e-mail with your new / revised idea that jumps off the page.

Having trouble coming up with a list of 20 - book a coffee session and let's do it together.

Target Your Marketing

Good afternoon -

I am working with a new client on a marketing plan. Step 1 was to identify his target market. "He said businesses". Be really specific about your target market.
Is there a geographical area?
Male vs female?
Do they know your product?
Are they looking for your product?
What size of business?
Does the business rent a store location?
Who runs the business? (the owner or a worker)
Is there a time of year that they look for your product?
What problem do they have that you can solve?
Where do your potential clients buy other products?
Where do your potential clients network?
Who else sells to your potential clients?
How else do they solve their problem? (order on-line, order by catalog, read a book, etc)
Do you potential clients know they have a problem?

As you can see - the more information that you know about your client the better. Organize this information so that you can find some opportunities for marketing and some sales strategies to attract their attention to your business.

If you need help identifying your target market, please call me at 647-287-0320 to set up a complimentary introductory session.
